Xenotaenia consists of one species only, Xenotaenia resolanae.
This species can easily be kept and bred in the aquarium although they are relatively aggressive fish, which demand big tanks, congeners and, perhaps, other genera / species that do not suffer from the occasional hunts. The temperature can vary between 20 °C and 26 °C.
There is a relationship between the genus Xenotaenia and the genera Allodontichthys and Ilyodon.
