This species has only been found in a river close to the village Amado Nervo. The place is on the Mex. 45 in the southern periphery of the city of Durango in the Federal State of Durango. At the moment some scientists believe that it is a new species, while others regard this fish as a form of Characodon lateralis. Until the systematics of the fish is finally clarified they should be kept separately and under no circumstances housed together with other Characodon-species, especially not with Characodon lateralis.
