Allotoca regalis

Neoophorus

ALVAREZ, 1959

Allotoca regalis ALVAREZ, 1959
Neoophorus regalis ALVAREZ, 1959
Alloophorus regalis RADDA, 1984

English name:
Regal Goodeid

Family:
Goodeidae JORDAN, 1923

Subfamily:
Goodeinae JORDAN, 1923

Original description:
ALVAREZ, J. (1959): Contribución Al Conocimiento Del Género Neoophorus. Ciencia, Mex. 19 (1 - 3): pp. 13 - 22.

Derivation of the species name:
the name regalis was given in connection with the type locality Los Reyes.

Type locality:
at Los Reyes, Michoacán, Mexico.

Meristic properties:
Dorsal fin = 13 - 14 rays;
Anal fin = 12 - 13 rays;

For a long time Allotoca regalis (called Alloophorus regalis until 1996) had been considered to be extinct. No living specimen had been reported, and only a few conserved samples existed in museums.

But then DOMINIC ISLA and JOHN MANGAN rediscovered this species on April the 27th 1993 in a ditch (whose source is the Rio el Chivo) in proximity of the town of Los Reyes de Saigado, Michoacán, Mexico.
(air temperature:  18 °C, water temperature:  18 °C, pH value: 8.5. depth of water: 5-8 cm, water: standing, underground: mud, overgrown with vegetation). Other fish did not occur.

In February 1999 DOMINIC ISLA and JOHN MANGAN collected Allotoca regalis again.

We hope that in the near future Allotoca regalis will be bred sufficiently so as to get a solid aquarium population.

At present (December 2000) no animals reproduced in captivity are available in Germany so far as I know. There are a few animals (about 10 specimen?) in the Netherlands.
