English name:
Piebald Goodea, Speckled Sawfin Goodeid

Family:
Goodeidae JORDAN, 1923.

Subfamily:
Goodeinae JORDAN, 1923.

Original description:
PELLEGRIN, J. (1901): Poissions recueillis par M. L. Diguet, dans l’Etat de Jalisco. Bull. Mus. Nat. Hist., Paris, 7: pp. 204-207.

Origin of the species name:
The name multipunctatus (lat.) refers to the spotted body of the fish.

Type locality:
in the area of the city Guadalajara, Guadalajara, Mexico.

Meristic properties (female)
Dorsal fin = 15 - 17 rays,
Anal fin = 15 - 17 rays.

The culture of Skiffia multipunctata is easy. Aquariums of 80 liters or larger should be used. Due to their origin these Goodeids should also be kept in hard, slightly alkaline water. The water temperature should fluctuate between 17 °C and 22 °C.

The food should consist of flakes, frozen and live food. A vegetable portion in the form of scalded spinach is also important. Any algae in the aquarium will become an additional source of food so it should not be removed.

Breeding succeeds without problems. With Skiffia multipunctata one can speak of a prolific, peaceful and attractive species. Around 20 fry are delivered in a spawning and the older fish do not pursue these. Because of their size (10 mm and more) raising the fry is without trouble.

With Skiffia multipunctata (and Skiffia francesae) the aquarium-hybrid "Black Beauty" has been bred, which is very pretty. This is fertile and so should not be kept together with specimens of either parental species.

Referring to observations of BRIAN KABBES Skiffia multipunctata's area of distribution in nature seems to be larger than previously estimated. Skiffia multipunctata has actually been reported only around the city of Guadalajara. BRIAN KABBES has still found this species at a distance of 150 km southwest of this big city. In comparison with Skiffia lermae Skiffia multipunctata exists in larger numbers. Above all, the biotope at Noroto (which is southwest of the Chapala lake) seems to contain a large number of fish of all ages. The fish living here barely differ in their appearance. Skiffia multipunctata lives here in soft water so one should not add soda to the aquarium water of these fish. This species is sensitive and should be treated with care.
