Allodontichthys hubbsi

MILLER & UYENO, 1980

English name:
Whitepatched Darter Goodeid

Family:
Goodeidae JORDAN, 1923

Subfamily:
Goodeinae JORDAN, 1923

Original description:
MILLER, R. R. & UYENO, T. (1980): Allodontichthys hubbsi, a New Species of Goodeid Fish from southwestern Mexico. Occ. Pap. Mus. Zool. Univ. Mich. 692: pp. 1-13.

Derivation of the species name:
named hubbsi after Dr. CARL L. HUBBS, USA

Type locality:
Tributary of the Rio Tuxpan, 8 km north of Pihuamo, close to the affluence of the Rio Terrero, Jalisco, Mexico.

Meristic properties:
Dorsal fin = 14 - 16 rays;
Anal fin = 14 - 17 rays;
Pectoral fin = 16 - 18 rays;
Ventral fin  = 6 rays;

Keeping the species Allodontichthys hubbsi is not very difficult. Because of the aggressiveness of the fish, it is important to use tanks of an appropriate size (at least 60 litres per animal) which should have enough hiding places using plants, stones or roots. The temperature should be between 18 °C and 23 °C. During the winter as well as at night the temperature should be rather low. The water should be hard with a pH value of at least 7.

Allodontichthys hubbsi lives a mainly ground-orientated, secluded life between rocks, stones and roots that are covered by algae. The fish mark off a territory, which they defend against other males so vigorously, that in the end sometimes the defeated animal is killed.

The feeding of Allodontichthys hubbsi is without problems. Flakes, frozen and live-food are accepted, but the diet should be vegetable to some extend. For this Allodontichthys hubbsi can be fed with scalded spinach in addition to other foods.

The breeding of Allodontichthys hubbsi is not very easy and sometimes not successful. One condition certainly is a low water temperature. The fry are not threatened with being eaten, so the females do not have to deliver in a seperate tank.
