Characodon spec. “Abraham Gonzales” wurde von IVAN DIBBLE (?) gefunden.
Die derzeitige Namensgebung erfolgte aufgrund der am Fundort liegenden Stadt Abraham Gonzales.

Die Stadt liegt ca. 30 km nordwestlich entfernt vom Fundort von Characodon audax.

Es herrscht zur Zeit noch keine Einigkeit darüber, ob es sich hier um eine neue Goodeiden-Art handelt. Vielmehr sind einige Goodeiden-Liebhaber der Meinung, dass es sich bei Characodon spec. Abraham Gonzales um eine Kreuzung zwischen Characodon audax und Characodon lateralis handelt. Im Hinblick auf die Tatsache, dass sowohl die Körperform als auch die Körpergröße von Characodon spec. Abraham Gonzales identisch ist mit der von Characodon audax, ist diese Möglichkeit nicht von der Hand zu weisen. Lediglich die schwarzen Farbanteile der Körperfärbung von Characodon audax sind bei Characodon spec. Abraham Gonzales rot.
